2000 hasta la actualidad: Indie rock, consolidaciones y otras yerbas

El inicio del nuevo milenio se caracterizó por la explosión del Indie Rock como la moda de los últimos años. Comenzando con The Strokes con su excelente e influyente álbum debut Is This It que motivo el origen de numerosos grupos: Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, MGMT, Kasabian, entre muchos otros.

Pero The Strokes no fue ni es el único grupo importante de la actualidad. The White Stripes con Elephant como estandarte marcó un estilo que otras bandas como The Kills, The Black Keys y Yeah Yeah Yeahs también supieron explotar.

Por su parte, Radiohead con el éxito de In Rainbows y Kid A se sigue manteniendo como una de las mejores bandas de hoy en día. Así como otros grupos que siguen demostrando su vigencia desde los noventa tal es el caso de Pearl Jam, Wilco, Belle And Sebastian, e incluso Portshead con su retorno.

También es importante remarcar el rápido crecimiento que cosechó Coldplay en los primeros años de esta última decada, transformandose en una de las bandas más populares, así como Foo Fighters que está alcanzando su máxima madurez en estos últimos años.

Tampoco hay que dejar de lado el auge de numerosas cantantes femeninas como Fiona Apple, Adele, Amy Winhouse, Lily Allen, Kate Nash entre otras.

La nota negativa de la época estuvo marcada en sus primeros años con la imposición del Nü Metal con bandas como Linkin Park, Papa Roach y Limp Bizkit a la cabeza caracterizadas por ser más comerciales que talentosas. Así como el Teen Pop que hoy en día sigue infectando el planeta con Justin Bieber, los Jonas Brothers y otros inmaduros productos marketineros.
