1994 a 1999: Britpop, rock alternativo y pop comercial

El suicidio de Cobain en 1994 determinaría la desintegración de Nirvana. Al mismo tiempo una especie de nueva invasión británica se avecinaba en el mundo: el “britpop”. El mismo era un genero musical caracterizado por estar influenciado por bandas de los 60 y 70 como los Beatles, los Rolling Stones, los Kinks, etc. Oasis y Blur, eternos rivales, encabezarían este nuevo movimiento, que divulgaba un mensaje diferente al inculcado por Nirvana.

En los noventa, el rock alternativo surgido la década anterior seguiría creciendo en base a nuevos grupos y artistas como Pavement, Beck, Björk, The Flaming Lips, entre otros. Y Radiohead, surgida en la misma época, llegaría a la cumbre con su obra maestra Ok Computer.

Probablemente lo más negativo de este período fue la gestación de un pop comercial basura, mediatizado por cadenas como MTV, que fomentó y dio a luz a grupitos y artistas como Britney Spears, los Back Street Boys, entre otros.
