1980 a 1989: La década de la diversidad musical

Los primeros años de los 80 traerían aparejados eventos trágicos que marcaron la historia del rock, como lo fueron la muerte de John Lennon, de Bob Marley y de John Bonham. La muerte de este último, baterista de Zeppelin, determinaría la disolución de aquella legendaria banda.

Esta serie de hechos marcaría un declive por parte de los grupos más importantes de los sesenta y setenta. Y como consecuencia habría un auge en la diversidad de estilos musicales como: el metal (y sus variaciones), el post punk, el new wave, el dance pop, etc.

Dentro de las bandas de Metal, Metallica, Megadeth y Iron Maiden fueron algunas de las más importantes. Pero simultaneamente el subgenero denominado Glam o Hair metal se transformaría en el más popular de la década. Y grupos como Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe y Poison serían los principales precursores.

En respuesta a la música popular de los ochenta (y especialmente al Hair Metal), una rama paralela y no comercial denominada rock alternativo, nacería de la mano de bandas como R.E. M., Sonic Youth y Pixies y se divulgaría en radios más bien universitarias hasta alcanzar su mayor popularidad en los noventa.

Sin embargo, el grupo más importante en la primera mitad de la década sería The Police, que junto a Talking Heads serían los exponentes del New Wave. Luego el trono lo tomaría U2, quienes se empezarían a transformar en una de las bandas más grandes de la actualidad.

Tampoco se puede dejar de lado a grupos clásicos ochentosos que empesaban a surgir en esta decada con mucha fuerza como New Order, luego del fallecimiento de Ian Curtis y la posterior disolusión de Joy Division, The Cure con su estilo gótico unico e incomparable y The Smiths en Inglaterra de la mano de uno de los duos compositivos mas importantes de la historia musical como fueron Morrisey y Marr.

Por otro lado, a finales de los 80 se darían 2 hechos importantes: el surgimiento del movimiento denominado “Madchester”, un conjunto de grupos, como los Stone Roses y Happy Mondays, que combinaban el rock psicodélico con la música dance; y la aparición de los Guns N’ Roses como uno de los grupos de hard rock más importantes de aquel momento.
